Sustainability On Campus

University Dining Services is committed to sustainable practices in all aspects of our operations. We fully support and champion Western's mission to serve as a model institution for sustainability, and strive to foster the health of the environment in which we live, produce, and consume our food.
We demonstrate this commitment through our people and our practices.

WWU Dining Sustainability Initiatives

  • We source from various local vendors to funnel your dining dollars back into our community and bring the freshest dining experience possible. Learn more about our local vendors here.
  • We offer Fair Trade/Rainforest Alliance Coffee at our campus markets, convenience stores, espresso bars and dining commons.
  • We have front and back-of-the-house composting at all dining locations on campus.
  • A majority of the packaging used in retail dining locations is compostable or recyclable.
  • All three dining commons (Viking, Ridgeway and Fairhaven) have implemented a Zero Waste Residential Dining Program.
  • We offer Zero Waste Catering Events served on compostable wares.
  • Quarterly, we host a Sustainable Meal in the resident dining commons that features a locally and sustainably produced menu.
  • Annually, we coordinate campuswide Recyclemania efforts.
  • Our exclusive "Blue Cleaning" system is utilized at all dining locations. This high-tech system utilizes ionized water to clean rather than harsh chemicals.
  • We now publish a monthly Sustainability Newsletter to update, communicate and educate on our progress.
  • All office paper used in our operations contains 100% recycled (post-consumer) content.
  • We perform regular assessments to audit the effectiveness and proper implementation of our sustainability programs.
