Vegetarian & Vegan Dining
Vegetarianism & Veganism Defined
Vegetarianism is an increasingly popular lifestyle that offers a variety of important health benefits, including improved body weight/composition and a reduced risk for numerous chronic diseases such as cancer, heart disease, and type 2 diabetes. A person may choose to become a vegetarian for any number of reasons: animal rights, health, religion, personal taste preferences, financial concerns, etc. There are many different types of vegetarians, including the following:
- Ovo-Vegetarian: does not eat mealt, poultry, fish, or dairy but will eat eggs
- Lacto-Vegetarian: does not eat meat, poultry, fish, or eggs but will eat dairy
- Pescetarian: does not eat meat, poultry, dairy, or eggs but will eat fish
- Ovo-Lacto Vegetarian: does not eat meat, poultry, or fish but will eat dairy and eggs
- Flexitarian: sometimes follows a vegetarian diet but not always
- Vegan: does not eat meat, poultry, fish, dairy or eggs and may not eat honey or other foods from animals or processed using animal products such as white sugar, white flour, etc., and some also do not use animal products such as silk, leather, wool, etc.
Whether you are considering going vegetarian, have just made the transition, or have been a vegetarian for years, it is important to make sure you are getting all the nutrients your body needs to be healthy and strong.
