Baylor Dining and Facility Services are seeking a proactive approach to provide vision and leadership in response to environmental stewardship for the Baylor community. In an effort to become more sustainable and embrace our social responsibility we are actively engaging in the following initiatives:

Sustainability in Retail

Sustainable Purchasing

  • Certain Einstein Bros. coffees and teas are certified Fair Trade and/ or Organic
  • Starbucks Coffees are ethically sourced and are grown with the environment in mind
  • Moe’s Southwest Grill serves grass fed-beef, all natural chicken, and steroid-free pork, and organic tofu
  • Freshii uses plant-based to-go products

Energy Conservation

  • Freshii does not use any ovens in their operations to reduce energy consumption

Sustainable Purchasing

  • Identify and serve an increasing amount of locally grown, organic, and vegan items at each residential dining hall when possible. By 2016, 20% of our items will be sourced locally

  • Our fresh milk is sourced from Oak Farms located outside of Dallas, Texas

  • Coffee in residential dining halls are Rainforest Alliance certified or Fair Trade Certified and/or USDA Organic 
  • Single-use takeout containers are produced from 100% annually-renewable material in the United States. As of Fall 2012, Styrofoam takeout containers are no longer in use across campus.
  • Residential dining halls use pizza boxes that contain between 40-60% recycled content 
  • Residential dining halls use recycled-content hand towel and bathroom tissue products that are certified by Ecologo
  • All napkins across campus are bleach-free and composed of 100% recycled content
  • All copy paper contains 30% post-consumer recycled content and is certified by the Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) 

Waste Reduction

  • Reusable takeout program implemented in Collins, East Village, Memorial and Penland residential dining halls
  • All residential dining halls use only reusable dishware for dine-in eating
  • All leftovers from Collins, East Village, Memorial and Penland are sent through a pulping machine to reduce the quantity landfilled
  • All dining halls collect used cooking oil for recycling by Alliance Processors, Inc. in Fort Worth, Texas
  • All facilities recycle cardboard, plastics, office paper, printer cartridges and electronic equipment
  • Contribute to Baylor's RecycleMania competition
  • Beverage discounts with reusable cup purchase available at Starbucks, Atrium Cafe, Einstein Bros Bagels and P.O.D. Convenience Store 

Water Conservation

  • All residential dining halls have been tray-less since 2008
  • Employees are trained to conserve water when washing dishware 

Energy Conservation

  • Office and work area lights are turned off when not in use for more than two hours and electronic equipment is turned off when not in use for more than four hours
  • All kitchen appliances are ENERGYSTAR certified, where applicable

Additional Highlights

  • The floors of all dining halls are cleaned with electrically-activated tap water, which kills germs without harsh chemicals
  • Green Seal certified cleaning products are used to clean other areas of the dining facilities
  • Strategic partnership with the Campus Kitchen Project, a student-run organization, since 2008. The Campus Kitchen Project runs an organic garden on campus that grows produce that is donated to local food kitchens.
