How many college students have had to think about making healthy food choices before arriving on campus? Most probably came from a home environment where at least two meals a day were prepared or purchased for them, knowing that these meals were most likely comprised of a variety of healthy foods.
Classes, assignments, sports, and social activities lead to hectic schedules for students, leaving them with little time to think about what and when to eat. Meals are frequently squeezed between these activities, or abandoned all together. However, it is important for students to remember that food is fuel for their minds and bodies, a fact that makes eating the right foods all the more essential.
Though students know that a balance of grains, protein-rich foods, fruits, and vegetables is the foundation of a healthy diet, they may not feel confident in achieving this balance in their daily lives. Wake Forest Dining is dedicated to providing students with an abundance of high quality foods, along with sound nutritional information to guide students in the right direction. This is evidenced at each meal in each location. Below is a listing of Wake Forest's dining venues, along with some of their healthy offerings:
The Fresh Food Company:
- Steamed vegetables at lunch and dinner
- Fresh sliced and whole fruit at each meal
- High quality, lean meats prepared with little or no added fat
- Vegetarian options from The Grill, The International Grill, Southern Kitchen, Mediterranean Oven, and the Produce Market.
- Low-fat and fat-free milk and yogurt
- Homemade soups
- Whole-grain bagels, muffins, and cereals
- Animal fats are never used in our cooking; instead, we choose to use oils high in mono- and polyunsaturated fats, such as canola and olive oil wherever possible.
Subway on the Quad:
- Famous for it's fresh fast food, Subway provides an extensive menu of low-fat, high-fiber sandwiches and salads
Benson Food Court:
- PanGeos - nutrient-dense salads, grains, wraps, and pastas, including many vegetarian recipes
- Fresh fruit cups and whole fruit
- Asian stir-fry featuring fresh meats, vegetables, rice, and noodles
- The Farmer's Market (each Wednesday) grants students the opportunity to stock up on over 15 varieties of fresh fruits and vegetables, sold at competitive market prices
- Low-fat and fat-free milk and yogurt
- Whole-grain bagels and cereals
- Freshly prepared chef and garden salads to go
- Chick-fil-A's grilled chicken breast sandwiches and salads
Magnolia Room:
- Providing students the rare opportunity to sit down, relax, and eat in a formal dining room with table service, the Magnolia Room offers a luncheon buffet daily for $6.99, including beverages. Healthy choices include baked and roasted meats, steamed vegetables, freshly baked breads, and potato and salad bars.
Shorty's:
- Lunches include fresh pastas, salads, and vegetables
- Fruit smoothies with fresh ingredients and 100% fruit juices
IS Food Court:
- Homemade soups
- Grilled chicken sandwiches from Grille Works
- Lean turkey, roast beef, and chicken sandwiches from Montague's Deli
- Fresh salads and fruit to go
Sundry, Polo Area Sundry, and Bodega convenience stores:
- Organic fruits and vegetables
- Organic frozen meals, snacks, and beverages from brands such as Newman's Own, Amy's Organics, Naked Juices, and Stonyfield Farms

Our staff dietitian, Kate Ruley, M.Ed., R.D. is involved in menu selection and development to ensure that meals are prepared with good nutrition in mind. She is also active in promoting healthy lifestyle practices on campus through displays, small group discussions, and publications.
