Meet Xin, Nutrition Intern @ Tiger Dining

Xin was born and raised in Malaysia. In 2009, she took 36 hours of flight to Purdue University to pursue her undergraduate degree in Dietetics. Since young, she has developed special interest in food and hoped to serve healthy and tasty food utilizing locally grown ingredients to promote health and wellness in the community. Her interest in food and nutrition grew more when she learned about the benefits of medical nutrition therapy in treating chronic diseases. Xin Yi is fluent in 4 languages and a few Chinese dialects and would love to contribute in International Nutrition upon graduation. Xin is currently pursuing her master degree in Clinical Nutrition here at University of Memphis. She works part time in Tiger Dining.

What is a Farmers Market?

A farmers market is a multi-stall market at which local farmers and producers sell agricultural products directly to the general public at a central or fixed location. The products include fresh fruit and vegetables, meat products, dairy products, grains, flowers, herbs and locally prepared foods.

What are the benefits of Farmers Market?

1.Financially benefits the farmers and the local community.
Today’s farmer receives less than 10 cents of the retail food dollar.

2.Local fresh produce is healthier and better tasting.
Fresh produce loses nutrients quickly and produce in farmers market is usually picked within the past day or two.

3.Buying from the local farmer helps protect our environment.
Local food doesn't have to travel far. This reduces carbon dioxide emissions and packing materials.

4.You can try a new fruit or vegetable!
Many farmers markets offer lesser known fruits and vegetables. Colorful fruits and vegetables are full of antioxidants and phytonutrients.

5.It's a great way to get your kids involved.
Let them pick out something new to try, and then they can help prepare a meal or snack.
