Meal Plans - Frequently Asked Questions

Residential Meal Plan FAQ Commuter Meal Plan FAQ
I LIVE ON CAMPUS.
How does my Residential Membership Work?

Meals are used anytime in our residential restaurant at the Brooks Student Center on the Gorham Campus or for dinner (Monday - Thursday from 4pm to 7pm) at the Woodbury Campus Center Food Court on the Portland Campus.
  • Each time you enter the dining room we scan your USM Card and an "all-you-care-to-eat" meal is subtracted from your weekly balance.
  • Every Wednesday morning your weekly balance is refreshed.
  • There are no restrictions on when or how many times a day you wish to dine; providing you have a meal balance on your card.

Meal Plan dollars are included with your plan. They are used exclusively for dining on campus and welcomed at all of our service locations. Use these dollars to pay as you go.

  • You receive a set amount of dollars each semester depending on what plan you select.
  • Each time you make a purchase, the purchase amount is subtracted from the balance on your account.
  • They can be used for beverages, snacks, convenience items, full meals, additional "all-you-care-to-eat" meals, and guest meals.

Your Meal Plan also includes two Guest Meals per semester. Invite a friend!

Can I carry over my unused meals to the next week?
No, meals must be used in the week they’re assigned and cannot be carried over to the next week. Plan to use your meals each week. We can help you decide on the right plan to fit your schedule and eating habits, ensuring that you get the full value for your dollars.

What if my work or class schedule doesn’t allow me to get to the dining room on time?
Our ready to go bagged meal program offers meals to go for breakfast, lunch or dinner. Simply complete your order form at least two hours prior to needing to pick up your meal. Forms are at the front desk of the residential restaurant.

Can I change my meal plan?
Yes, for the first two weeks of each semester. If you find a meal plan isn’t working with your schedule as well as you thought it would, you can change your plan. All you have to do is stop by the greeter’s station in the Brooks Student Center or the Woodbury Campus Center Dining Office and complete a meal plan change form. It’s that easy.

Can I treat a friend to a meal in my plan?
Yes, in our residential restaurants using your two "guest meals" per semester. These "all-you-care-to-eat" guest meals can be used at any time to treat a friend. Note that your weekly meals are only for your use. If you would like to treat a friend after your guest meals have been used, you can use your meal plan dollars.

What do I do if my meal plan dollars run low?
You have the ability to purchase Flexible Dining Dollars - the more you buy the more you get for FREE! They work just like Meal Plan Dollars, but they carry over through your academic career, until you use them up! To Buy, click here or visit one of the Dining Services Offices.

You also have the ability to purchase Husky Buck$ - that are welcomed at any of our dining locations. For more Husky Buck$ and USM card information, visit www.usm.maine.edu/usmcard.

How do I sign up for a meal plan?
You will be asked to select a meal plan when Residential Life sends your room assignment. Your plan will default to the Gold Plan if you do not pre-select a plan; which you can change during the first two weeks of school.
