Declining Balance Letter to Parents

Meal Memberships
Clarkson University has its own food service and all students who live on-campus have the opportunity to sign up for any one of the meal plan options. Anyone that lives in a Residence Hall is required to be on a formal meal plan. Anyone living in the on-campus apartments is not required to be on a formal meal plan, but may purchase one if they wish. Just stop into the Main ARAMARK Office, located in the lower level of the Cheel Campus Center and sign up!

Meal Plan Cost and Options
All meal plans cost $2,290 per semester, and it may be changed during the first two weeks of each semester. The meal plan options help you to determine your eating habits and daily schedule. There are five different meal plans that you can choose from. For instance, if your eating habit is eating 15-20 meals each week, then you may want to select the "Gold Meal Plan".

Purchasing additional Declining Balance dollars
Just stop by the Campus Dining Office in Cheel basement or see a Main Street cashier and purchase the extra credit. You may use cash or check (made payable to Clarkson University).

Purchasing Meals on Campus
To order a meal, you need not bring cash. Clarkson University allows you to use the Declining Balance. A Declining Balance functions similarly to a bank debit card. Each time you make an order in any of the retail dining locations (Main Street Cafe, Bene Pizza, Our Place, Java City, Concrete Café), the dollar amount is subtracted from your total existing account dollars; hence, making your balance decline. However, students with no declining balance may purchase it from a cashier anytime, and in return save the 7 percent sales tax.

Meal Exchange
Another aspect that Food Service provides is the meal exchange. It is Campus jargon for a meal eaten at Cheel Main St. Café, Our Place and Bene Pizza as one of your weekly meals (three meals per day, Monday - Friday; two meals per day, Saturday and Sunday, one meal per meal period).

The meal exchange specials are posted, and you may choose one of these specials as your meal or you can use up to $4.75 to order what you want off the regular menu or $4.60 off of the Subway menu. This "Meal Exchange" is worth $4.75 per meal and $4.60 per meal at Subway. Over $4.75 or $4.60 will be deducted from your declining balance or required cash. Your meal exchange meal replaces the meal you would normally have eaten in the dining hall. For further information, please contact (315)268-3816 or E-mail: haggette@clarkson.edu.
