Questions how these great meal plans work?

For meals in the Hulman Union Cafeteria students on a commuter meal plan just present their ID card to our cashier and we simply scan away one of the meals on the student's meal plan.  Regardless of what meal plan you're on, we swipe one meal for each time you eat in the Union Cafeteria.  If you bring a guest with you we swipe your card once for each person who is eating with you.

For meals in our retail locations--Subway and Noble Roman's-- students on commuter meal plans may purchase any amount of food they wish.  We add up your purchase, and depeding on the per meal cost for your meal plan (if you purchase the 300 meal plan your per meal price is $5.20, the 150 meal plan's per meal price is $5.70 and the 90 meal plan's per meal price is $6.20) you'll pay the difference between your actual purchase and your meal plan credit amount.  If you purchase under your meal plan credit amount we'll refund you up to $.50 for each meal use.  For example, a student goes to Subway and purchases $5.35 of food.  If he's on the 150 meal plan (with that meal plans $5.70 meal credit) we'll give him his food, swipe away a meal and refund the student $.35.  If the student happened to be on the 300 meal plan with his meal plan credit of $5.20 we'd swipe away a meal and the student would pay an additional $.15.  He can pay this in cash or with some add-on DB.

A student on a DB plan simply pays the full price for his purchase from any of our locations.  Our normal cafeteria price for our breakfast, lunch and dinner is substantially more than a commuter meal plan's per meal price, so the best value for commuters who plan to eat in the Hulman Union cafeteria fairly often is to have a commuter meal plan with meals (and some add-on DB).

If a student on a commuter plan has unused meals remaining on their account at the end of the academic year he or she has three options.  First, he can have the value of those meals held as a credit against a meal plan purchase for the following year (no charge for this), the meals can roll over to the summer (but not for the following academic year, again with no charge),  or the value of the meals may be refunded for a $40.00 fee.  The refund goes back to the person who actually paid for the meal plan and not the student if someone else paid for the meal plan for the student.  In all cases, the commuter student is responsible for stopping by our office in the Union to tell us what he or she wants to do with any unused meals.  This needs to be done within one week of the end of the academic year in order to secure a refund or credit for the unused meals.  The student may call us (877-9317) or extension 8351, stop by our office in the Union, or write to us at dining@rose-hulman.edu.
