TIPS TO PREVENT HOLIDAY WEIGHT GAIN

  1. Choose your battles- we all have our holiday favorites and it's worth it to indulge on these a few times a year.  It also helps to prevent binging on other food later on.
  2. Treat the holidays as days- The holidays are supposed to be just that, days and not supposed to last through the entire months of November and December.
  3. Stay active- If you get out and get moving during the holidays, it will help to boost your metabolism so that those delectable holiday calories you do eat will burn faster.
  4. Make things from scratch- For those of you that don’t go all out in the kitchen during the holidays, I encourage you to do so. The food will probably taste better, make you proud and also burn some calories with all that hand chopping and mixing.
  5. Look for healthy options-  Some examples include white meat over dark meat, cranberry sauce over gravy, pumpkin pie over pretty much any other pie, sweet potatoes, veggies not drenched in dressings, etc.
  6. Watch those portions- Take even smaller portions than you normally would because there are usually a lot more items than you normally eat.

Seasonal Special - Pecans

Check out the residential restaurants for items featuring the special food this season, pecans!

PECAN FUN FACTS

  • The pecan tree is the state tree of Texas
  • The name "pecan" means, "nut requiring a stone to crack"
  • Pecans are a great source of unsaturated ("good") fats, minerals and antioxidants
  • Pecans are best known in pecan pie, but are found in many traditional southern recipes from pecan crusted catfish to mushroom and pecan rice.
  • A handful of pecans a day may help to reduce cholesterol as much as some cholesterol lowering drugs
  • There are over a thousand varieties of pecans and many are named after Native American tribes such as Cheyenne, Sioux and Mohawk.

CAMPUS SUSTAINABILITY DAY ON POLYTECHNIC

Did you know that the dining services served up a picnic-style meal consisting of locally produced food for campus sustainability day on October 22?  About 30 students brought their own plates and sat down to celebrate the campus, sustainability and food produced locally (some even grown right on campus!)
