Meal Memberships - Frequently Asked Questions

Being new to campus, we anticipate you will have many questions, so we've gathered some of our most frequently asked questions about your dining program and the answers to help you familiarize yourself with our dining program.

Meal Plan Questions

How does a Meal Plan work?
Meal plans are geared specifically to give you better dining value for your dollars when you use a meal card instead of paying cash to eat. Your meal plan is accessed through your student ID Card. A magnetic strip is placed on the back of your card and works with our computer system to identify you as a meal plan member. Meal plans come with a set number of all-you-care-to eat meals and a set amount of Flex Points.
You are given all of your meals at once in the beginning of the semester to use any way you like. While meals do not carry over from one semester to the next, Flex Points will carry over from fall to spring semester if a meal plan is purchased both semesters.  Add Flex Points any time throughout the year!

Where can I use my Dining Services Meal Plan?
You can use your meals at any of the three all-you-care-to-eat dining facilities - Legends in Whitehurst Hall, Rogers Cafe in Rogers Hall, and Cafe 1201 in Webb Center. You can also use your meals for Meal Exchange at the P.O.D. Markets ANY TIME! You can use your Flex Points at any Monarch Dining location.

Can I treat a friend to a meal on my plan?
Yes! You may use your meals any way you wish at the residential dining locations (Legends in Whitehurst Hall, Rogers Cafe in Rogers Hall, and Cafe 1201 in Webb Center).  You may also swipe your Flex Points for a friend as long as you are present.

Can I change my meal plan?
Yes. Meal plan changes are only accepted during a specific time period and can be done online. For fall 2013, you are able to change your meal plan August 30 - September 7, 2013. For spring 2014, you are able to change your meal plan from January 13-20, 2014. Please visit

Why should I sign up for a meal plan?
There are a lot of advantages to signing up for a meal plan. You have the security of guaranteed all-you-care-to-eat meals and can save up to 36% off of the door rate of the all-you-care-to-eat locations. Use your meal swipes for Meal Exchange ANY TIME at the P.O.D. Markets. You have the flexibility of a la carte purchasing at the retail locations and Flex Points are TAX FREE!

How do I sign up for a meal plan?
Living in a Residence Hall on-campus (including Powhatan)? You are required to be on a meal plan and must sign up through the housing application process. If you live on campus and have questions about your meal plan, Email

Living in the University Village or Nusbaum Apartments? Having a meal plan is optional and signing up is easy! Just sign up online or in the Card Center in Webb Center.

Living off-campus (including The District)? Having a meal plan is optional and signing up is easy! Just sign up online or in the Card Center in Webb Center.

Are there certain times when I can use my meal plan?
With Block Meal Plans, you can swipe multiple times during a meal period, deducting a meal from your balance with each swipe. (Please see Meal Exchange rules and regulations for details on multiple Meal Exchange swipes.)

Limited breakfast and lunch/brunch – At Café 1201: If you miss the traditional breakfast period (7am – 10am) or lunch period (11am – 2pm) or brunch period on the weekends (9:30am – 1:30pm) you can swipe a meal during limited breakfast (10am – 11am), limited lunch (2pm – 4pm), or limited brunch (1:30pm – 4pm). This applies to all meal plans.

Can I use my meal plan during breaks?
No. Your meal plan is deactivated during Thanksgiving, Winter, and Spring breaks. The meal plan is based on meal allowances when classes are in session.

Flex Points Questions

What are Flex Points and how can they be used?
Flex Points come with your Meal Plan and allow you to supplement your meal plan by providing you non-taxable, discretionary spending money to use at all Monarch Dining locations and Catering at any time.

Can I buy more Flex Points?
Yes! If you run low on Flex Points during the semester, you can add Flex Points in increments of $50 any time online or in the Card Center in Webb Center.

Do Flex Points roll over semester to semester?
Flex Points will roll over from fall semester to spring semester if a meal plan is purchased both semesters.

Can I use Flex Points during breaks?
Yes. You can use your Flex Points at any Monarch Dining locations that are open during breaks.

What is the difference between Flex Points and Monarch Plus?
Flex Points come with your Meal Plan and allow you to supplement your meal plan by providing you with non-taxable, discretionary spending money to use at all Monarch Dining locations. The Monarch Plus account is a prepaid debit account. There are no transaction or set-up fees and no minimum balance requirements. Monarch Plus is accepted at a variety of locations both on and off campus including all Monarch Dining locations.

Meal Exchange Questions

What is Meal Exchange?
Instead of using Flex Points, you can use one of your allotted meal swipes for a meal at the P.O.D. Markets (P.O.D. Market-Quad, P.O.D. Market-Village, P.O.D. Express-Webb, and P.O.D. Express-Gresham) any day, any time. The Meal Exchange menu options are indicated at the P.O.D. Markets and online.

What do I get for Meal Exchange?
You can use a meal swipe at the P.O.D. Market to get a meal option from the meal exchange menu. If you are using meal exchange, you have to pick your meal option from the meal exchange menu. You have a variety of options to choose from. 

What time is Meal Exchange?
You can use Meal Exchange during store operating hours.

Dining Program/Services Questions

What is continuous dining?
Continuous dining is available only at Cafe 1201, Monday - Sunday.
Cafe 1201 will be open continuously from 7am - 9pm, Monday - Friday.
Breakfast: 7am - 10am
Limited Breakfast: 10am - 11am (reduced menu items as they prepare to switch over to lunch)
Lunch: 11am - 2pm
Limited Lunch: 2pm - 4pm (reduced menu items as they prepare to switch over to dinner)
Dinner: 4pm - 9pm

Cafe 1201 will be open continuously from 9:30am - 9pm, Saturday and Sunday
Brunch: 9:30am - 1:30pm
Limited Brunch: 1:30pm - 4pm
Dinner: 4pm - 9pm

I have special dietary needs. What do I do?
We have registered dietitians who consult with Monarch Dining if you should need a customized diet. Nutritional information is posted for most items at our dining locations and on this website under the menu tab. If you need assistance or someone to speak with, please contact the Director of Dining Services, Larry Hogge, to schedule an appointment to meet with you.

Monarch Plus Questions

What is a Monarch Plus Account?
The Monarch Plus Account is a prepaid debit account designed for the Old Dominion University Community. The account is placed directly on your University ID Card. Participation is open to any student, faculty or staff member. There are no transaction or set-up fees and no minimum balance requirements. This is a no risk program. If at anytime you want a refund, you can request one from the Card Center.

What are the advantages to having a Monarch Plus Account?
It provides the flexibility and convenience of a debit card to use on and off campus. You don't need to carry cash or visit an ATM every time you need lunch or snack money. Simply open a Monarch Plus Account with as little as $20.00 at the University Card Center (www.odu.edu/cardcenter). You or your parents can add money as you need it anytime.
