Lawrence Dining Hall has implemented a number of waste reducing procedures that have already had an enormous positive impact on the environment! With the recycling of cardboard, cans and fryer oil, along with management of our food waste we have reduced the over all pounds of waste at Lawrence. The graph below shows you the reduction in waste comparing the first 7 weeks of Fall semester with the first 7 weeks of Spring semester (To date, we only have the data for the 1st 7 weeks of Spring semester, this will be updated as we accumulate more information). Also, below this information we have the results on our fryer oil recycling program and the positive environmental impact it is having.

Some interesting facts about the Dining waste reduction program for this year are:
Average Weekly Waste: Fall: 20,650 lbs Spring 18,040 lbs A 13% Reduction
Median Weekly Waste: Fall: 20,560 lbs Spring: 17,560 lbs A 15% Reduction
FROM FALL TO SPRING SEMESTER WE HAVE REDUCED WASTE BY 13%, WHICH EQUATES TO 29,332 LESS POUNDS OF WASTE!!
Recycling @ WCU
We have some great news about all the recycling we have been doing. We just received the final recycling data from all the fryer oil we have recycled throughout 2008 for the Dining Services' locations! This is truly great news and we look to expand our positive impact on the environment with more recycling programs for 2009!

| * Offset Emission Data is sourced from the National Biodiesel Board website. www.BioDiesel.org Offset Emission Data is a coefficient compiled from multiple EPA studies on BioDiesel. Recycled volume is crossed with a standard 80% multiplier to account for water, garbage, food particles, etc. Offset Emission Data is representative of WVO converted into BioFuels and run in vehicle engines and or furnaces. Remaining waste is recycled in a environmentally friendly fashion. All values measured in pounds (lbs). |

| ** CO2 savings to equivalent trees was determined by using an average of 7bs of CO2 used per tree per year and is an estimate based on research and data compiled through Tufts University Climate Initiative and is available online at: www.tufts.edu/tie/tci/sequestration.htm Younger trees are typically more efficient consumers of CO2, however sequestration of CO2 by trees is highly variable based on tree type, age of tree and general environmental conditions. |
