Top 10 Reasons to Eat on Campus?

10. Conserve Energy and Cut Greenhouse Gas Emission
We have been Implementing training programs for all front line staff. Onsite there are regular review and training sessions with staff to help reduce wasteful practices (e.g. closing vestibule doors; reporting leaky faucets; equipment scheduling and maintenance; thawing items the previous day to avoid running under warm water etc. ; we preferentially purchase Energy Star certified kitchen equipment when available and/or equipment that is designed to reduce energy and water usage.

9. Trained Culinary Staff
We are proud to have trained culinary staff preparing meals on campus.  All our staff are trained on an ongoing basis to prepare the best possible meal options for all the students on campus.

8. Support Local Farmers
ARAMARK partners with our Local Produce Suppliers from coast to coast to help us identify and preferentially order local produce when available.  We continue to expand and develop new programs for sourcing foods that are grown/raised/processed locally, as well as those food items that are also grown/raised/ processed in a responsible and sustainable manner.  We are also expanding programs for natural and organic food sourcing.

At University of Toronto St. George, Aramark has partnered with Local Food Plus (LFP) to offer sustainable food products to customers.  For more information on the partnership between U of T, ARAMARK and LFP visit our
Sustainability page.

7. Support Sustainable Production of Food
As Part of our commitment to sustainable practices we have added food items to our menu which embraces this concept. When available we purchase ingredients that are certified by Local Food Plus as sustainable and responsibly grown/ raised/ processed.  For more information on sustainability efforts at U of T visit our Sustainability page.

6. Recycling and Composting Programs
Across our food service locations, we have comprehensive recycling programs that help divert waste including aluminum, plastic, glass, paper, cardboard and cooking oil for new uses.  Please help us divert as much waste from landfill as possible by using the appropriate bins.

Taking it to the next level, we are excited to partner with a number of campuses from coast to coast in recycling our organi waste -- i.e., composting.  At University of Toronto St. George campus we are composting our food waste at all locations.

5. Biodegradable and Recyclable Packaging
although we encourage students to dine using reusable service ware whenever available, when take out is a must, biodegradable packaging is an environmentally preferred alternative.  In support of a greener packaging program, we are introducing biodegradable service ware into our operations.  Made from annually renewable natural resources including sugar cane, wild reed, bamboo and corn, this line of take out ware can be composted, uses less energy and water to produce, and will biodegrade faster than their more persistent counter parts.  Now you can feel great about what you eat and what you eat it on!

There’s much more to our napkins than meet the eye.  In addition to the unbleached variety we also use napkins made from a high content of post consumer recycled materials…  And remember, even if its white, it doesn’t mean it went through an environmentally taxing bleaching process. Our napkins are also Ecologo certified –
North America’s most widely recognized and respected certification of environmental leadership.

4. Fair Trade Coffee
ARAMARK is proud to serve Fair Trade Certified Coffee through our Expressos’ Coffee Concept.  This certification means the coffee you are drinking was purchased from a registered International Fair Trade Coffee farm.  We also offer organic coffees and fair trade organic coffee blends.  Our coffee blends and variety are constantly rotating so come visit us and try our Fair Trade Coffee offerings.

3. Nutritionally Analyzed Menu
As part of our mission to offer a variety of food choices and cycle menus for our food court locations, we also nutritionally analyze our menus.  Coming soon, we will have the nutritional information of our menu items available under the Menus page of this website.

2. Quick and Easy -- Save Money!
Eating on campus saves you time.  You don’t have to get in your car and drive home or to an off site location for a meal.  This saves time and not to mention the unnecessary environmental damage.  Also by purchasing your lunch on campus you save additional time in preparing lunches and gives you more time to study!

1. You Don't Have to Do Dishes
You can save time – you don’t have to stand over the sink to do dishes

You can save water – you don’t have to use excess water for dishes (we do our dishes in bulk saving water compared to each individual person doing there own dishes.)

Consider being eco-friendly...
Our food choices can significantly contribute to green house gas emissions, those unwanted gases that cause climate change? The environmental impact aka carbon foot print is a result of how our food is produced, processed and also in large part how our food’s travels from field to fork. To calculate your own footprint visit  Zero Foot Print website - there is a portion dedicated just to food! From there you can purchase carbon offsets to fund reforestation projects and other initiatives that will help make your food choices more carbon neutral!  Visit Zero Foot Print website for more details.
