Below are a number of leading organizations that are leading environmental stewardship. ARAMARK has established formal relationships with each and will continue to form strategic alliances to forward our Green Thread commitment.

 

 

 

Sustainable Campuses: The Sustainable Campuses project aims to empower students to lead initiatives on their campuses toward greater social, ecological and economic sustainability through campus operations, curricula and community member attitudes.

 

Sierra Club of Canada has several major national campaigns with four program areas: Health and Environment , Protecting Biodiversity , Atmosphere and Energy , et Transition to a Sustainable Economy .

We have an excellent reputation within our constituency and externally for refusing to compromise our ideals for convenience or for comfort, and for taking risks when necessary. We have an excellent, developed media presence, and we are equally comfortable in a Minister’s office as at a kitchen table with a group of activist fishermen. We can do more with a little than most ever do with much.


 

Sustainable Food 

 

Ecology Action Centre. The Ecology Action Centre has acted as a voice for Nova Scotia's environment for over 35 years. The EAC was voted #1 Activist Organization by readers of The Coast magazine for four years running. Since 1971, the EAC has been working to build a healthier, more sustainable Nova Scotia. Today we have over 1400 members, 250 volunteers and staff, and seven active teams and committees. The Ecology Action Centre works closely with social and natural scientists and makes strong use of science in communicating its message to the public.

SeaChoice: Healthy Choices, Healthy Oceans. SeaChoice is a comprehensive seafood markets program with the primary goal of realizing sustainable fisheries in Canada and abroad. We use the best available science, strategic communications and partnerships to mobilize sustainable seafood markets via six main programs

The Rainforest Alliance works to conserve biodiversity and ensure sustainable livelihoods by transforming land-use practices, business practices and consumer behavior. Companies, cooperatives and landowners that participate in our programs meet rigorous standards that conserve biodiversity and provide sustainable livelihoods.

Food Alliance is a nonprofit organization that promotes sustainable agriculture by recognizing and rewarding farmers who produce food in environmentally friendly and socially responsible ways, and educating consumers and others in the food system about the benefits of sustainable agriculture. 

The Fair Trade Certified™ Label guarantees consumers that strict economic, social and environmental criteria were met in the production and trade of an agricultural product. Fair Trade Certification is currently available in the U.S. for coffee, tea and herbs, cocoa and chocolate, fresh fruit, flowers, sugar, rice, and vanilla


 

Green Buildings

ENERGY STAR is a joint program of the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency and the U.S. Department of Energy helping us all save money and protect the environment through energy efficient products and practices.

Green Seal: Founded in 1989, Green Seal provides science-based environmental certification standards that are credible, transparent, and essential in an increasingly educated and competitive marketplace.

The Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design (LEED) Green Building Rating System™ encourages and accelerates global adoption of sustainable green building and development practices through the creation and implementation of universally understood and accepted tools and performance criteria.


 

Waste Management

Halifax Regional Municipality Garbage/Recycling/Green Cart collection. YOU’VE PROBABLY HEARD the expression, “Less is more”. Well in HRM, generating less waste means saving more money. In 2007/2008, waste disposed in the HRM decreased by 4,746 tonnes, a 2.9% decrease over the previous year. Recycling and composting increased by 1,682 tonnes, a 2.5% increase, and construction and demolition material reused and recycled increased by 1,589 tonnes, a 9.4% increase.

The National Recycling Coalition (NRC) is a national non-profit advocacy group with members that span all aspects of waste reduction, reuse and recycling in North America. The Coalition represents advocates from every region of the country, in every sector of the waste reduction field.

RecycleMania is a friendly competition among college and university recycling programs in the United States that provides the campus community with a fun, proactive activity in waste reduction.


 

Responsible Procurement

The North American Green Purchasing Initiative of the Commission for Environmental Cooperation (CEC NAGPI) recently researched Green Procurement in North America and found that both public and private institutions are identifying and measuring the benefits of their Green Procurement programs.

The Responsible Purchasing Network (RPN) is a national network of procurement-related professionals dedicated to socially responsible and environmentally sustainable purchasing.
